The right size instead of blind compression

A PDF can contain text, scans, photos, forms and embedded fonts. That is why no single setting suits every document. Balanced is usually sufficient for email and portals. The smallest setting helps with strict upload limits, while better quality preserves fine text and graphics more carefully.

What “Structure” means

This mode reorganises and compresses the existing PDF components without turning pages into images. Text selection, links and form fields remain available. If the original is already smaller, no new file is offered.

When pages are rebuilt as images

With the other three settings, the tool first checks a structure-preserving version. It offers a rebuilt version only when rebuilding the pages saves more space. This is especially useful for scans and photo-heavy documents, but removes text selection, links and forms.

Frequently asked questions

Is the original file changed?
No. The tool only reads the original in your browser. A new file is offered only when it is smaller.
Why can I no longer select text after strong compression?
When rebuilding the pages gives the smallest result, the new PDF consists of page images. Use Structure when text, links or forms must be preserved.
What happens to digitally signed PDFs?
A later change would invalidate the digital signature, so these files are not altered.
Does this work on a phone?
Yes. However, many pages and high quality settings require a lot of memory. A computer is more reliable for large documents.
